Broadcast and Defamiliarise

How can we use ecological, feminist and more-than-human ideologies and aesthetics to change dis-engaged, hegemonic men’s attitudes towards climate change, and more broadly, use and abuse of violence, power, and privilege for individual greed?

Keywords: hegemonic masculinity, climate-change, ecology, dis-engagement

White Men are the biggest contributors to climate change, whilst experiencing the least of its effects. Hegemonic masculine values have shaped modern day capitalism, leaving us the need to redefine gender identities and provide solutions to traditional ways of thinking. The use of semiotic typography, image making, and material installation could work as aesthetic devices for de-familiarising spaces that embody patriarchal dominance, rigidity and strength. Through defamiliarisation, there is the opportunity to present new ecological and relational values, derived from deep ecology and eco-feminism. This also aims to affect the viewers relations to themselves, those around them, and their more-than-human networks. Contemporary art can be a poetic antidote to hegemony, as it can ‘restore a social bond that is perceived to be lost,’ and can ‘create new neuro-architectures that emancipate our minds from such coercive structures.’ Beyond the spaces in Fabrica, this project could look further into re-prioritising patriarchal spatial values in public space, to engage those who are not interested in being engaged. Through the rebellion against hegemony can we carve a desirable and equitable future.

\ Hegemonic change who aggressively react to societies wishes for equality. Project Aims To emotionally effect unemotional men… To make a project in solidarity with women, trans, queer community To give power to feminine practice To prioritise care instead of domination How to achieve these aims Instead of seeing columns, can viewers see something else? My project takes into consideration that some projects that aim to change masculinity only further divide. My project chooses a more passive solution; to change the values associated with masculine spaces in aim to create an emotional connection to ecology and connectivity. I am focusing on the symbol of an architectural pillar, a prime example of a gendered space. Rigid, strong, phallic, and tall, the pillar reflects the values of hegemonic masculinity. Every time a human walk through the entrance of a parliament that has pillars (most western parliaments do) their mind is subconsciously primed with these values.
